Word Counter — Tips & Guide

Count words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs instantly as you type. Use the reading time estimate and keyword analysis to improve your writing and hit your target lengths.

Aim for 1,500–2,500 Words for SEO

Blog posts in this range consistently outperform shorter content in organic search. Long-form articles give Google more signals to rank and provide more value to readers.

Twitter: Under 280 Characters

Twitter/X limits posts to 280 characters. Use the character counter to craft tweets that fit, and aim for 200–240 characters to leave room for retweets and replies.

Keep Sentences Under 20 Words

Short sentences improve readability. The Hemingway rule: if a sentence runs over 20 words, consider breaking it in two. Lower average sentence length = higher readability score.

Use Keyword Density Analysis

The keyword frequency list shows your most-used words. Ensure your target SEO keyword appears 2–3 times per 1,000 words. Overuse signals spam; underuse misses ranking signals.

Academic Papers: Check Requirements

Most academic papers specify word counts in assignment briefs. Use this counter to stay within the required range and avoid penalties for being over or under the word limit.

Reading Time Helps Audience Expectation

A "5-minute read" label on your blog post sets reader expectations and increases click-through. Use the reading time estimate to add this label to your published articles.

Paste or type your text into the text area above. The word count, character count, sentence count, paragraph count, and estimated reading time update in real time as you type — no button to click. You can also see a keyword frequency analysis showing your most-used words at the bottom.

For SEO, the ideal blog post length is generally 1,500–2,500 words. Posts under 1,000 words rarely rank for competitive keywords. Posts over 3,000 words can outperform shorter content but require exceptional quality to hold reader attention. The actual ideal length depends on your topic — some informational queries are best answered in 800 words, while pillar content pages may need 4,000+.

A standard printed page (8.5"×11", 12pt font, double-spaced) contains approximately 250–275 words. Single-spaced, a page holds 500–550 words. A Microsoft Word page at default settings (11pt Calibri, single-spaced) contains about 500 words. For academic papers, always check whether your institution's word-per-page estimate matches their formatting requirements.

A character count is the total number of individual characters in text, including letters, numbers, spaces, and punctuation. "With spaces" counts all characters including the blank spaces between words. "Without spaces" counts only the non-space characters. Character counts matter for social media posts (Twitter's 280-character limit), meta descriptions (under 160 characters), and SMS messages (160 characters per standard SMS segment).
